The research group will develop a structured education programmes for people with diabetes. The group combines clinicians from across primary and secondary care with an established track record and interest in structured education in diabetes in the areas of Type 1, Type 2, black and minority ethnic (BME) groups, adolescents and pre-pregnancy. Our group also includes experts in psychology and social sciences with considerable experience in adapting psychological theories to develop educational frameworks and in the appropriate measurement of relevant psychosocial processes and outcomes with which to inform and evaluate interventions. We have also included a project manager with experience in successful multi-site trials, and a trainer and educator who have written curricula and delivered structured education.

The research group, which includes a person with diabetes, will link with consumer panels drawn from BME populations. Research group members have considerable experience in designing and piloting educational and self-management programmes, designing and running randomised control trials using the MRC framework for complex interventions, training and supporting educators, and quality assurance of educator training and programme delivery.

Our research questions are broad and include:

  1. Integration of ongoing structured education into routine care;
  2. Education for pre-conception;
  3. Developing a generalisable quality assurance framework.
