Marking World Diabetes Day with healthy lifestyle message

You don’t have to sacrifice taste to enjoy lower fat, lower sugar food – as patients and members of the public at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge found out on World Diabetes Day.

To mark the day – which takes place every year on 14 November – the Eastern Region Diabetes Research Network, supported by diabetes clinical and research staff, held a stand to promote healthier lifestyles – with food samples and pedometers to give out to patients and members of the public.

Diabetes is a chronic and costly disease associated with major complications. Network Manager for the Eastern Region Diabetes Research Network, Sandra Mulrennan, said:

‘There has been a massive rise in type 2 diabetes in recent years, but several risk factors for the disease are modifiable and research has shown that lifestyle advice can be extremely effective in reducing diabetes risk.

That’s why diabetes education and prevention are so important.

Hopefully our stand will have encouraged more people to think about what they eat and how active they are.

You don’t have to make huge changes to your lifestyle to make a big difference to your health and reduce your risk factors.’
