The aim of the group is to establish a multidisciplinary network of clinicians, health services researchers, technology developers and epidemiologists who are interested in the innovative use of new technology for diabetes. The group will focus on new technologies designed to provide care at a distance and/or foster improved self-care for patients with diabetes. Telemedicine and greater use of web/internet technologies make remote monitoring and targeted health promotion/disease management increasingly feasible and attractive.

Ideas for large scale research:

  1. Pragmatic Trial of a Novel Remote Monitoring & Feedback Technology: Preliminary evaluation of the utility, effectiveness and patient acceptability of a novel PHA device/decision support system.
  2. User Experience and Impact of New Technology on Service Providers: Study of user attitudes to new technology stratified by age, gender and ethnicity; acceptability of remote monitoring/feedback, patient preferences; feasibility of deployment in clinical settings; effect on work patterns & workforce configuration/skill-mix; cost-effectiveness.
  3. Improving Diabetes Self-Management using Novel PHA Technology: Complex intervention randomized controlled trials - vs. standard care in:
    1. adults with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes
    2. adolescents with type 1 diabetes
    3. diabetes in pregnancy and
    4. patients with diabetes & CVD
