The research group will focus on the role of physical activity and exercise in the progression and management of Type 2 diabetes. The members of the group hold experience in; diabetes management, physical activity, exercise, social science, behaviour change psychology, clinical trials design and clinical trials management. Input will also be provided by the NIHR Research Design Service for clinical trials design and statistical support (Professor Elaine McColl).

The group aim to understand the importance of everyday physical activity (and inactivity) in the progression of Type 2 diabetes and how physical activity and exercise can be used effectively as treatments for Type 2 diabetes. Broadly the group will focus on developing a better understanding of:

  1. The relationship between physical activity (and inactivity), glucose control and cardiovascular disease risk.
  2. How much more active people have to be to improve glucose control (establish the dose response relationship).
  3. How to effectively initiate patient and professional behaviour change to help people maintain a physically active lifestyle.
  4. Evaluate the long term impact of a physically active lifestyle upon glucose control, cardiovascular risk, quality of life and healthcare costs in Type 2 diabetes, and
  5. The influence of ethnicity upon points 1 to 4.
