The “Immunity, genes and therapy for Type 1 Diabetes” Research Network Writing Group includes academic physicians, clinician scientists, scientists and clinical consultants with interests in adult or paediatric diabetes, clinical immunology, medical genetics and intervention and prevention trials in Type 1 diabetes. The major research questions this group aims to address are (i) the nature of the aetiopathogenesis of Type 1 diabetes; (ii) the role of genetic elements in conferring risk; (iii) the contribution of different arms of the immune system to β‐cell death/survival and how these are genemodified; leading to (iv) the rational development and optimization of strategies for intervention and prevention of the disease. Our research activities span wet‐laboratory discovery research in immunology and genetics, through studies on human subjects to decipher disease biomarkers and understand pathogenesis, leading to translational activities in the clinical trial arena. Our overarching goal is to establish a cohort of UK investigators committed to making basic science observations a platform for the development or optimization of immune‐based therapies for Type 1 diabetes.
