The research group will focus on the detection and prevention of diabetic complications in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The group will work with three established cohorts of children with TID; the Oxford Regional Prospective Study of Childhood Diabetes (ORPS n500), Nephropathy Family Study (NFS n1,000), the JDRF/ Wellcome Trust Genetic Resource Investigating Diabetes (GRID n8,000).

The principal aims of the group will be to identify biomarkers (albumin excretion, measures of glomerular filtration, lipids and lipoproteins, carotid artery intima medial thickness, associated familial phenotypes) and common genetic variation which relates to risk for complications. These markers will form the basis for intervention studies, principally exploring the use of ACE inhibitors and statins to determine their role in providing cardiorenal protection during adolescence.
