Structure of the Networks
UK Clinical Research Network
The UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN) was established in 2005 to support clinical research in the UK. It is initially supporting the development of six Topic Specific Research Networks in the fields of cancer, dementias and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, medicines for children, mental health and stroke and one Primary Care Research Network. Over time, research will be supported across the full spectrum of disease and clinical need through a Comprehensive Clinical Research Network.
UK Diabetes Research Network
The primary goal of the Diabetes Research Network (DRN) is to achieve benefits for people with diabetes, or at risk of developing diabetes, through excellence in clinical research. Please see our about us page for more information.
Scottish Diabetes Research Network (SDRN)
The Scottish Diabetes Research Network (SDRN) was formally launched in August 2006. The aims of the SDRN are to establish an integrated clinical trials infrastructure between the major academic centres in Scotland and their associated managed clinical networks, to increase recruitment to all clinical trials in Scotland and to provide a platform for high quality, unintrusive epidemiology on a national level. The Network recently began a pilot of their Research Register for patients actively interested in research.
Diabetes Research Network Wales
The Diabetes Research Network in Wales aims to promote existing strengths and potential in diabetic research and diabetes care in Wales. The Network Lead for DRN Wales is Professor David Owens.
UK Mental Health Research Network
The UK MHRN is a Department of Health funded network designed to provide a research infrastructure. The network supports vital large-scale research which will help to raise the standard of mental health and social care research throughout England. In addition, it acts as a central point of information and reference, connecting service users and carers to researchers and mental health professionals. The UK MHRN research will not only respond to government policy but will help guide practice and contribute to the understanding of mental illness and the increase of mental wellbeing in the UK.
Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Network
The Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Network (DeNDRoN) facilitates the conduct of randomised prospective trials and other well-designed studies of the dementias and neurodegenerative diseases, including those for prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The creation of a UK research network for dementias and neurodegenerative diseases allows a sharing of resources and methodological expertise across a wide range of disabling long-term disorders which we recognise to share many common factors. It builds on the strengths already present in the UK as well as increasing general capacity in the field of dementia and neurodegeneration and will cover major diseases including Alzheimers, Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and Huntington’s Disease.
National Cancer Research Network
The National Cancer Research Network (NCRN) provides the NHS with the infrastructure to support cancer clinical trials in England. Our aim is to improve the speed, quality and integration of research with the ultimate aim of improving patient care. NCRN was established by the Department of Health in April 2001 and has already succeeded in doubling patient accrual into cancer clinical trials.
Medicines For Children Research Network
The Medicines for Children Research Network (MCRN) has the central objective of facilitating the development of medicines that are both safe and effective in the treatment of children. It will have a major focus on clinical trials but will also include other study designs relevant to the overall objective.
Stroke Research Network
The Stroke Research Network (SRN) provides a world-class health service infrastructure to support clinical stroke research and remove barriers to its conduct. The aim of the Network is to facilitate stroke research by bringing about focused, effective investment to enhance NHS research infrastructure for stroke, and to increase collaborative working between academics, stroke clinicians, stroke service users and research funders.
