Dr Ann Millward, Clinical Lead and Consultant, Plymouth Diabetes Clinical Research Unit, Derriford Hospital

The SW Peninsula Diabetes Research Network has been in existence since the beginning of April 2006. It is led by Dr Ann Millward, academic consultant from Plymouth, with support from Professor Andrew Hattersley and Dr Phil Evans, and is managed by Mrs Rosemary Sowden.

The Network is providing additional research staff in the existing Diabetes clinical trials teams in Exeter, Torbay, Truro and Plymouth. These teams are working on well designed trials and studies to benefit those with Diabetes or at risk of developing Diabetes, drawing on patients from both Primary and Secondary Care.

Plymouth Diabetes Research Unit

Dr Millward leads the Plymouth Diabetes Research Unit in Plymouth, supported by two Clinical Assistants, a senior research nurse, three research nurses and an administrator.

They have a full portfolio consisting of a mix of commercial clinical trials as well as a number of non-commercial trials ongoing at any one time.

Exeter Diabetes Research Team

Dr Ken MacLeod leads the clinical trials aspect of the Exeter Diabetes Research Team in Exeter, supported by a Hospital Practitioner, Dr Mike Ramell, six research nurses, a receptionist and an administrator.

This research team also works closely with Professor Angela Shore and Professor Andrew Hattersley’s research teams in the Peninsula Medical School Experimental Medicine Facility, with many of the team also being involved in studies based there.

Dr Paisey

Dr Richard Paisey, Lead for Torbay

Torbay

The team at Torbay Hospital has been established for a number of years, is led by Dr Richard Paisey, supported by three research nurses and an administrator. The research team has close links with the clinical teams in the hospital, particularly dietetics, and also has excellent links with local GP practices who are committed to supporting research.

Truro

The newly established Cornwall Diabetes Research Team is based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. Dr Jon Pinkney is supported by Helen Chenoweth and Terri Chant, Diabetes Research Nurses, and Michaela Ayers, Research Administrator.

The team is forging links with local primary care teams, diabetes specialist nurses and patient support groups, and will be participating initially in the DARE (Diabetes Alliance for Research in England) study.

The Launch

The official launch of the South West Peninsula Diabetes Local Research Network was held on Wednesday 7th March 2007 at the John Bull Building, Peninsula Medical School, in Plymouth.

There were presentations from Professor Des Johnston, Director of the UK DRN, and from the three clinical leads of the Peninsula LRN: Professor Andrew Hattersley, Dr Ann Millward and Dr Phil Evans. In addition, there was a poster display of diabetes research previously carried out in Torbay, Exeter, Plymouth and Truro.
