TrialNet Natural History Study of the Development of Type 1 Diabetes. Phase 1, 2 and 3

DRN code: DRN100

Chief Investigator: Prof Polly Bingley

What is TrialNet?

TrialNet is a network of 18 Clinical Centres working in cooperation with screening sites in the United States, Canada, Finland, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand. This network is dedicated to the study, prevention, and early treatment of type 1 diabetes. The TrialNet Natural History Study is recruiting close family members of people who have diabetes. These individuals are more likely to be at higher risk of developing diabetes than individuals without a family history of diabetes. The aim of the study is to learn more about how diabetes occurs by looking at early markers of diabetes in the blood.

The study involves taking a blood sample from volunteers and testing it for antibodies that react with native proteins in the body. If these “autoantibodies” are present, an oral glucose tolerance test and further antibody and genetic testing will be carried out. This will enable each individual to be assigned a risk factor for developing diabetes. Follow-up tests will then be carried out every six months to see if these individuals go on to develop diabetes.

Who can take part?

People who are aged 3-45 and have a blood relative with type 1 diabetes - primarily first degree relatives (siblings, offspring and parents). Must be willing and able to give informed consent.
