What is FENLAND?

This is a population-based cohort study of the interaction between environment and genetic factors in determining obesity, insulin sensitivity and hyperglycaemia. It's aimed at investigating the interaction between genetic and lifestyle factors in determining diabetes, obesity and related metabolic disorders. It also aims to investigate strategies for the prevention of these metabolic disorders.

Who can take part?

The study is looking at 10,000 people born between 1950 and 1975 from three regions in Cambridgeshire: Ely, Wisbech and Cambridge. Volunteers have a number of body measurements taken including height, weight, waist circumference and body fat levels. Blood samples are taken which are analysed for sugar (glucose) and cholesterol levels and used to test for diabetes. Volunteers also answer a series of lifestyle questionnaires and undergo a treadmill test to measure physical fitness.
