What is the EPIC–Norfolk Third Health Check?

This is an investigation of diet, lifestyle and biological determinants of health and chronic disease. The European Prospective Investigation of Cancer (EPIC) is a large multi-centre study looking at the connection between diet and cancer. EPIC-Norfolk (University of Cambridge) is a part of this Europe-wide programme.

EPIC-Norfolk is following over 30,000 people living in Norfolk. We are finding out about the factors that are most often present when people stay healthy and those more likely to be there when they develop cancer or other diseases, such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, certain eye diseases and those people showing cognitive decline.

Who can take part?

We are revisiting EPIC-Norfolk participants, both men and women, who were aged between 40 and 79 when they joined the study at baseline and who lived in Norwich and the surrounding towns and rural areas. Since baseline they have been contributing information about their diet, lifestyle and health through questionnaires, and also through health checks. These checks are carried out in an EPIC-specific clinic by fully-trained EPIC research nurses.
